Something weird happened to me today… I enjoyed writing. Seriously.

I read a book on professional sales techniques, of all things, and I got really excited about it. Now, that’s not much of a surprise because I am a learner by nature. According to Clifton Strengths Finder, that means I’m not so much concerned with the outcome of my learning as the process itself. In other words, useless inquisitiveness… yep, sounds about right.

So when I had to move on from reading the book to writing a 5 page review of it (as a requirement for a job interview… more on that later), my excitement turned to dread… wait, or so I thought it would. That’s the pattern I always followed in the past. No, I didn’t experience dread this time. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t as excited to write as I had been while reading, but as I sat down this morning with my rare cup of fantastic cold-brewed organic fair-trade coffee, I noticed there was some sort of urge inside me to take this information that I gathered while reading and express it… in words… written words… may not seem like a big deal, but those who really know me realize how weird this is. And as I began to write, I become pleased with the words flowing out of me and onto my laptop. I get a good page & 1/2 written, & go wake up Wife, who at this point has pressed her alarm snooze about three times. I’m excited to tell her about the last two hours, and to read to her what I’d written so far.

To keep it short, the paper was finished this afternoon, and I am quite pleased with the result. Not just because I’m hopeful about the interviewer’s response, but also because it felt good to process concepts and ideas on paper (albeit electronic paper) which hasn’t happened in a long time.

Next step: time to blog. I’ve had this blog for quite some time without doing anything with it (yes, I know, one of those people). Over the last few months I consistently thought of things I would love to write about online, but I always put it off in favor of other activities. Maybe I was waiting for some significant date to commence my brilliant writing (realized that after New Year’s and my B-day, of course), or for some significant event. Instead, all it took was a relatively minor realization: given the proper circumstances, I think I actually enjoy writing… well then, here goes.
